This holiday is also observed in many locations around the world and is used to commemorate the initial victory of the Mexican forces over the French in the Battle on Puebla. This battle took place in the 5th of May, 1962 and thus the name Cinco de Mayo, which means 5th of May in Spanish.
Cinco de Mayo is observed as a regional holiday in some parts of Mexico and the United States, to immortalize the Mexican army's improbable victory over the French at the battle of Puebla.
