In this movie about the holocaust Millie Perkins plays the role of Anne Frank who is the protagonist in the award winning book. The story is about a young Jewish girl and her family who is forced to hide in an attic in Amsterdam when it is occupied by the Nazis. Being familiar this film is one that everyone will be able to relate to.

Exodus - 1960

Like all movies on this list Exodus also shows the horrors of the Holocaust. This war film is based on a novel by Leon Uris and shows the life of an American nurse stationed at the Karalos internment camp in Cyprus. It is this camp where thousands of Holocaust survivors stay because they have no where else to go. As the story unfolds we see different aspects when a Haganah rebel smuggles hundreds of these inmates out of camp for an illegal voyage. Do watch this classic movie when you can!

The Hiding Place - 1975

As the title suggests this movie is about a hiding place that the sisters Corrie ten Boom and Betsie who were Christians provided to Jews during the holocaust. This movie is based on an autobiography and talks about their experiences before and after their imprisonment in the Nazi concentration camp.

Sophie’s Choice - 1982

Starring Meryl Streep, this film is about Sophie, a Polish immigrant who survived the Nazi concentration camp. This film is about her life after she loses her father and husband in the Nazi work camp. At one stage she has to make a heart wrenching choice and that is when her story unfolds and awful truths are brought to the fore.  Like other stories related to the holocaust this one is another tear jerker!

Schindler’s List - 1993

This award winning holocaust movie stars Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson and is based on the true story of Oskar Schindler who was a German, born and brought up in Moravia. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the movie shows how Oskar Schindler, a shrewd and rich businessman goes completely broke trying to save 1200 Jews from the death camps.

Life is Beautiful - 1997

This Italian award winning holocaust movie is a love story which has a bit of comedy in it too. This film takes place in Italy and is about Guido, an Italian Jew who falls in love and marries Dora. At one stage in the story things turn out bad and Guido and Joshua, their son are taken away by the Germans. Dora despite not being a Jew insists on joining the family but unfortunately the whole family is separated at one stage. Not one to give up Guido keeps his family’s hopes up till the end.

Sunshine - 1999

Ralph Fiennes, Rosemary Harris and Rachel Weisz, play the main roles in this holocaust film. Sunshine is set in Hungary and talks about three generations of a Jewish family, their rise and their ultimate fall when the Nazis come into power. They try to escape the camp but even a conversion to Christianity does not help.

The Pianist - 2002

One of the best holocaust movies is the pianist. Directed by Roman Polanski and starring Adrien Brody this film is set in Poland and depicts the life of a Jewish pianist and how he struggles to survive in the difficult times. This pianist is based on the true story of Jewish pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman. This movie is definitely a must watch!

Defiance - 2008

Based on a true story about four brothers, this film displays hope, strength, love as well as loss. Starring Daniel Craig the story revolves around the brothers who are Jewish and live in Nazi occupied Eastern Europe. The movie talks about how these brothers escape into the Belarusian forest and join hands with the Russian resistance fighters and together build a village that offers them and hundreds of other Jewish non-combatants protection.

The Boy in Striped Pyjamas - 2008

Based on a novel by John Boyne, this British film shows life at that time through the eyes of two young boys, one the son of a Nazi commandant while the other the son of an inmate who is Jewish. It shows us the horrors involved in the German concentration camps at that terrible time when sadness, pain, hatred and loss were the only emotions involved.
