The year 2006 saw a steady rise in game development and their releases. Even though its 2 years past 2006, playing those games still revive great memories for me. I hope some of you who missed these games or would like to play them again would enjoy this list of top 5 hand picked best games of 2006 for your XBox console.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Elder Scrolls or simply Oblivion is a first player role-playing game. Elder Scrolls won a lot of awards for being the best game in its genre. In just one month of its release, 1.7 million copies for Elder Scrolls IV were sold. By January 2007, over 3 million copies copies were sold. With an expansion pack named Shivering Isles along with the Knights of the Nine plug-in, Oblivion was re-released under the name The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition. Oblivion is a great game to play with its amazing graphics, smooth game play and easy controls. The game consists of a detailed storyline but the game goes on even after completing the storyline as a player can develop the character of the game in their own manner. You can make your character be noble warrior, sinister assassin or the wizened sorcerer. The game consists of an excellent Artificial Intelligence engine, over 1000 other characters with speech capabilities and realistic graphics constituting of amazing weather effects, true like forests and beautifully crafted dungeons.

Gears of War

Gears of War is a tactical third-person action game. The games sold over 3 million copies in just 10 weeks of its official release. A Limited Collector's Edition was also released for this game which included a disc with extras and a book which titled Destroyed Beauty explaining the game's back-end story. The game consists of soldiers from the Delta Squad and their quest to save humans in the fictional planet Sera. The lead character of this game, Marcus Fenix is a former prisoner and a tough war-hardened soldier who leads to fulfill the quest along with his companions. A player can choose from single player option, cooperative play or multiplayer play with up to 8 players with ranging difficulties including casual, hardcore and insane. This game won numerous awards namely "Best Console Game for 2006", "Best Action Game", "Best 360 Multiplayer Game", "Best Overall Multiplayer Experience", "Best Console Multiplayer", "Best Action Game" and "XBox 360 Game of Show". A much awaited sequel for Gears of War named Gears of War 2 is slated to be officially released on November 7th 2008; probably the publishers eying to tap Christmas customers.

Fight Night Round 3

Seriously, Fight Night Round 3 is one of the best XBox 360 games with the best graphics ever to be seen on video games. Fight Night Round 3 is a sequel to Fight Night: Round 2, EA's previous release. The game play consists of the ability to develop one's own fighting style and match up with authentic and original fighting styles from world's best fighters. The game play seems truly original with heated press conferences before fights, trash talks and fights at weigh-ins with options to choose from single-player, ad-hoc or Infrastructure game modes. The game play also provides the ability to recreate original boxing fights on ESPN. Fight Night Round 3 won Best Offline Multiplayer award from IGN.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas is the 5th game in the Rainbow Six series. Rainbow Six received high acclamations from IGN saying it as "the best first-person shooter on the XBox 360" and from GameSpot claiming it as "excellent, immersive tactical shooter". Rainbow Six also won several awards such as "Best First-Person Shooter", "Best XBox 360 First-Person Shooter", "Best Online Game" and "Best XBox Live Game". The game play consists of a whole new experience of squad-based realism, real-time mission briefings and true style tactical game play. The flow for game is extremely smooth and engaging for the player and I am sure one would enjoy playing this to the fullest. Rainbow Six: Vegas is also available with Player's Pack Red Edition with two new game modes featuring Assassination and Conquest. A Limited Collector's Edition of Rainbow Six: Vegas was also released during its launch consisting of a bonus disc.

Dead Rising

Dead Rising was released on August 8, 2006 for XBox 360. Dead Rising from Capcom is a role-playing and action adventure based addictive title. The game play is quite realistic with record number of zombies coming towards you each having unique and original appearance and behavior; the game play also features unlimited use of vehicles, weapons and food. You control the lead character of the game Frank West having abilities to improve offensive and defensive capabilities as the game moves along. The game features three game modes namely 72 hour mode, overtime mode and infinity. Dead Rising has some technical issues related to clarity on display sets other than HDTV as it was made especially for HDTVs; those can however be improved in some cases by adjusting display settings, using component cables or setting the TV to wide screen ratio. Dead Rising won a number of awards namely "Most Innovative Design for Xbox 360", "Best Action Adventure Game", "Best Sound Effects", "Best Use of Xbox 360 Achievement Points", "Best Original Game" and "Action Game of the Year 2006".
